Our wonderful Pukekohe Central Kindergarten turned 70 this year! Opened on 13 March 1954 as our first kindergarten, Pukekohe Central have proudly served generations of families in our ever-growing Franklin community.
The kindergarten held their 70th Anniversary celebration on Saturday, 16th March. What a wonderful community event! It was a very moving day that brought together so many members of our community, including people who have attended Pukekohe Central Kindergarten in the past and whose own children now attend.
The celebration began with the blessing of Pukekohe Central Kindergarten’s newly painted mural. Pukekohe High School sponsored the paint and required equipment, and art teacher Catherine Tamihere worked alongside her students to develop the idea. This was done in consultation with kuia from the local area and is based on a Māori Myth, about the Mauri of Pukekohe. The mural initiatives are to enhance Pukekohe town through art while also recognising community identity and shaping a narrative that celebrates the area’s history.
Special mention to Christine Butler, Catherine Tamihere, (Art Teacher) Tyler Poa, Jade Bolton, Kayleen Barnard (Pukekohe High School Students) and Whaea Jade Chamberlain (Māori Teacher) for bringing this important project to life and commemorating this significant milestone for our Kindergarten and community.
Here’s to another 70 years and beyond!
